NONPROFIT GROUP COORDINATES CAMPAIGN TO HELP REBUILD KATRINA-DEVASTATED
CHILD CARE COMMUNITY IN NEW ORLEANS
WILMINGTON, Delaware—August 16, 2006—To acknowledge the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, The Family & Workplace Connection is coordinating a campaign called Making Coastal Connections. The purpose of the initiative is two-fold: to raise public awareness of work still needed to be done in the child care community in Orleans Parish, LA; and to raise funds to be given to the United Way of New Orleans, Success by 6 ® Program, who is coordinating the efforts to rebuild the child care community in the City of New Orleans and Orleans Parish.
In the City of New Orleans and Orleans Parish:
- Only 58 child care centers are open (or approximately 21%);
- 213 child care centers remain closed (or approximately 78%);
- Child care is the number two need, just below housing, for returning residents; and
- Financial support is needed for the child care community to purchase equipment, materials, and supplies for staff training.
The Family & Workplace Connection is requesting donations of at least $8.29 (August 29 is the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina) to help providers in New Orleans rebuild their child care community. All donations are tax deductible. Please make checks payable to: The Family & Workplace Connection – Katrina Fund. Donations should be sent by August 23 to: The Family & Workplace Connection – Katrina Fund, 3511 Silverside Road, 100 Wilson Building, Wilmington, DE 19810.
WaWa Food Markets are supporting The Family & Workplace Connection’s efforts by donating giveaways to first one hundred contributors to this initiative.
The Family & Workplace Connection is a nonprofit regional dependent care resource and referral organization whose mission is to enhance the supply and quality of care and education for children and elders and to help families effectively manage their work and personal life responsibilities.
